Pelicanul

About

The Pelican was built in 1966 at the shipyard in Giurgiu, being initially used for transport in the Danube Delta and in the 80s it crossed the country to be used for special races on the Bega, following that after the revolution of 89 it became less and less used until the 2010s when it became just a simple terrace.

The history of the Pelican on Bega has marked several generations of Banat residents, being one of the boats that offered passenger transport and leisure trips.

His story seemed to be at an end when it caught fire in the fall of 2012.
The Pelican was bought at the price of a kilogram of scrap metal in 2013 by the people from D.arc with the intention of restoring it and putting it back on the Bega next to Barja Darc, a place already known to the people of Timisoara. The local administration until 2020 was not open to dialogue, being much too preoccupied with its own public transport project, which nevertheless allowed the Bega Navigable Canal Administration to appear, whose role is to create strategies for the revitalization of the navigable canal. We don’t know what plans the current administration has, but we know that the Pelican has left the UMT halls for a new location, which makes it closer to Bega’s return.
The Pelican can be considered as part of the local heritage that will contribute to the revalorization of private navigable transport on the Bega. It will bring back into question the importance of the Timiș-Bega hydrographic system, as well as the revalorization of the hydrotechnical heritage that will make it possible to connect to the great European navigable transport network.
This year will be a challenge for Pelican and everyone around him. This may be the year he returns to Bega and brings us all together again to rediscover forgotten stories and places.

Pelican is back on Bega.

In the 1980s, the Pelican passenger boat appeared on Bega, built precisely in the Giurgiu shipyard. This Saturday Poli celebrates 100 years of football away from the Giurgiu football team. Even if they cannot be compared in terms of significance, the two are part of the city’s history and we are happy to be close to their stories. Timisoara needs these stories again.

Pelican, like Poli, has reinvented itself and is looking forward to the opening of the locks at Sânmihaiu Român, Uivar and those in Serbia, in order to carry on our dreams.

The current Pelican is Made in Tm…
